Nearly 5,000 schools and sixth-form colleges, 475 further education colleges and more than 1,000 public libraries in England and Northern Ireland have received reports from the Higher Education Funding Council for England which tell them whether chemistry, history, law and mechanical engineering departments are satisfactory or excellent.
In assessments carried out by the funding council just under a fifth of university departments were deemed excellent.
