Stanford nets record $400m gift
Stanford University is to receive $400 million (£280 million) from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the largest donation ever made to a United States university. Most of the money will support Stanford's endowment for humanities, sciences, and undergraduate education.
Death threats to blacks investigated
A special investigator has been appointed to look into death threats made against black students at Penn State University. Up to 500 students staged a protest on campus demanding greater protection after a flood of threatening letters and emails.
