Supercomputer goes online
A supercomputer capable of 10 billion calculations a second was being officially switched on today. The £1.4 million Cosmology Machine was being unveiled at Durham University’s physics department by trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt.
Bath offers discount masters
Bath University has developed a "bulk buying discount" scheme to encourage students to enrol on its masters programmes. It is offering employers discounts of up to 15 per cent on fees for its distance-learning MSc courses in construction management.
Hefce invites tech institute proposals
Universities and further education colleges are invited to submit collaborative bids for technology institutes that come with £25 million in capital funds. The Higher Education Funding Council for England will be taking bids from consortia.
