Until a couple of years ago, the grandly titled Pol Roger Oxford v Cambridge Blind Wine Tasting Match used to take place at the Oxford and Cambridge Club. But no longer: according to a Pol Roger representative, "the teams asked us to remove it from there" because of the club's ban on women members - university wine-tasting teams are usually mixed these days.
So the 1995 match, on February 28, was held at the University Women's Club. But this year, because of late withdrawals, there was not a woman on either side. "Both teams were very embarrassed," the spokesperson reported.
