Tories back university expansion
Shadow higher education spokesman Alistair Burt told delegates at the Conservative Party conference in Blackpool that there was no going back on university expansion. Speaking at a Universities UK fringe meeting last night, he said: “It is about breaking down the barriers and not about erecting another one.”
Queen's launches £4.5m sonic arts centre
Queen’s University Belfast has launched a £4.5 million sonic arts research centre. It is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and Ireland and brings together expertise in music, electrical and electronic engineering, and computer science.
Residents fight plans for third York campus
A residents’ action group has been formed to fight York University’s plans for a third campus that would include a science park on 40 hectares of greenbelt farmland. The campus in Heslington will not go ahead until an inquiry into a possible revision of York’s greenbelt boundaries has been completed.
Napier principal to step down
John Mavor, principal of Napier University since 1994, is to step down in December 2002. He is an electronics engineer and plans to work in the private sector and develop personal interests.
