Morris signals higher education overhaul
Education secretary Estelle Morris today announced a fundamental review of higher education. It will examine five areas: widening participation; maintaining world-class research; strengthening links with industry; rewarding excellent teaching; and improving management within universities and colleges. Ms Morris said: "As we expand further, we have got to think strategically about what the sector does and how it achieves it."
Tom Wilson exits contest for top AUT post
Natfhe official Tom Wilson has ruled himself out of the contest to replace David Triesman as general secretary of the Association of University Teachers. Mr Wilson, head of universities at lecturers union Natfhe and a former assistant general secretary at AUT, confirmed his decision last Thursday.
Microchip father opens Napier computer centre
Jack Kilby, inventor of the microchip and Nobel prizewinner for physics, has opened Napier University’s £5 million state-of-the-art Jack Kilby Computing Centre. It contains some 500 computer terminals and will be open 24 hours a day.
