Students at Imperial College, London, this week held a referendum on joining the National Union of Students.
The student newspaper carried two full-page adverts, one supporting and one opposing the motion. The first quoted student union president Sen Ganesh as saying: "At the moment, the NUS might be the worst thing for the union but might be the best thing for students."
The second quoted Mr Ganesh thus: "I will be voting no to the NUS - it's the worst thing that could possibly happen to us." The results will be out next week.
