International conference to examine future of steel research

March 21, 2002

Brussels, 20 March 2002

An international conference on 'Steel research - from ECSC (the European coal and steel community) to the future' will take place in Luxembourg on 26 June 2002.

The Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the first cornerstone of the European Union, entered into force in 1952 and will expire on 23 July this year.

The conference, organised by the European Commission's Research DG, is one of a series of events held to mark the end of the Treaty. It will examine the role and achievements of the Steel RTD (research and technological development) programme, the impact of ECSC steel research on steel production and the impact of improvements in working conditions.

Under the terms of Article 55 of the Treaty, the ECSC has provided funds for research programmes relating to the production and use of steel and coal. Specific steel research will continue in a modified form after the expiry of the ECSC treaty.
