Lyudmila Putina, the wife of the Russian president, has condemned proposals by the Russian Academy of Sciences to reform the Russian language.
She said the emphasis should be on "maintaining and preserving" the language, not on changing it. The academy's proposals involve 23 changes to the rules governing Russian orthography.
