Brussels, 18 Apr 2003
The European Commission is organising a conference entitled 'Governance of the European Research Area: the role of civil society', which will take place in Brussels on 12 and 13 June.
The event is designed as a forum for discussing participatory processes in the European Research Area (ERA), and an opportunity to develop a common understanding of civil society's participation in Community research. In other words, to move from research policy making towards research governance.
The conference therefore aims to:
- stimulate a debate among different stakeholders (institutional, companies, citizens' associations, scientists);
- gather feedback in order to prepare proposals for further action;
- develop perspectives for disseminating examples of best practice in participatory processes;
- collect ideas for further research.
The event is aimed at research policy makers, governance experts, representatives from civil society, researchers and practitioners in participatory processes, scientists, and business representatives.
Speakers at the conference will include Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin, and Director of the Research DG's Science and Society Directorate, Rainer Gerold.
