Industrial Technologies - Trieste forum to examine development of nanotechnologies and nanosciences in Europe

The Industrial Technologies Directorate of the European Commission's Research DG is organising EuroNanoForum2003 in Trieste (IT) from 9 to 12 December 2003 to encourage expansion of nanotechnologies in Europe.

EuroNanoForum2003 will examine the present situation in the development of nanosciences and nanotechnologies in Europe in the context of the European Research Area (ERA), the forthcoming enlargement of the EU, the international dimension and the integrating character of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The event will provide key players and specialists in public administration, research, education, industry, banking, financing, social sciences and the media with the occasion to exchange views and discuss the present development of nanotechnology.

Participants will be asked to consider and identify potential bottlenecks to the expansion and reinforcement of nanosciences in general, and to the formulation, development, application and use of nanotechnology-based products and services. Barriers can be of technical and non-technical nature, and solutions must cover all aspects of what has to become a real transformation of the traditional resource-based and sector-oriented industry and a change of culture, at all levels. Topics for discussion include: nanosciences; education and training; international co-operation; societal aspects and communication; accession countries; research, industrial innovation and entrepreneurship & financing instruments; and infrastructures, equipment and metrology.

The state of the art in a number of representative and interdisciplinary technical areas – such as nano-manufacturing and instrumentation, functional materials, ambient intelligence, nano-electronics, health and medicine, energy, nano-robots and NEMS, and optics and photonics – will be discussed and the potential applications and possible risks associated to the new technologies analysed.
