German firm BASF, one of Europe's leading proponents of genetic modification technology, could follow agribusiness Syngenta's lead by pursuing its research into GM crops in the US. Jurgen Hambrecht, BASF's chief executive, was reported to have said such a move would be considered if the European market did not become more receptive to the technology.
