Sir Alan Wilson, Department for Education and Skills director-general of higher education and former vice-chancellor of Leeds University, has won the 2004 European Prize in Regional Science from the European Regional Science Association. It recognises his theoretical and applied contribution to regional science, including his modelling work for city and regional planning.
