Stopping charlatans

Abuse of the professorial title is easily remedied (“Ersatz professors should be booed off the stage”, Opinion, 17 March). Section B3 of the Quality Assurance Agency’s Quality Code insists that “Higher education providers assure themselves that everyone involved in teaching or supporting student learning is appropriately qualified, supported and developed”. This section could easily be expanded to permit scrutiny, institution by institution, of the academic standards that underpin professorial appointments.
