Funding council chiefs were due to meet this week to decide how to advise ministers about "nationally important" academic subjects vulnerable to closure. The board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England wants to agree a response to a government request for advice on the future of five subject areas, including Arabic, Eastern European and East Asian languages and the sciences.
