One of the first tasks faced by Scotland's new Lifelong Learning Minister and Deputy First Minister will be to set the new level of tuition fees in response to top-up fees in England. Nichol Stephen, who also succeeds Jim Wallace as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, is expected to announce plans to charge medical students from the rest of the UK up to £700 a year on top of the basic tuition fee of £1,125.
