Key statistics
The data shown under Key Statistics is that provided by the university itself in its submission to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It represents data from the 2014 academic year, and may vary from subsequent or earlier years.

Students
This is the number of full-time equivalent students at the university.

Student:staff ratio
This is the ratio of full-time equivalent students to the number of academic staff – those involved in teaching or research.

International students
The percentage of students originating from outside the country of the university.

Female:male ratio
The ratio of female to male students at the university.

The latest 2016-17 Times Higher Education World University Rankings included 980 of the world’s most prestigious institutions, ranked according to 13 separate indicators, drawn from institutional data, 56 million citations to 11.9 million research papers including over half a million books and book chapters, and the results of a survey of over 20,000 scholars in 133 different countries. It was the most authoritative and comprehensive university rankings exercise ever undertaken. 

Times Higher Education uses a detailed series of quality control measures but, during the aggregation of a huge volume of data such as this, there is inevitably scope for errors. In the latest rankings, we have fully investigated the following errors and updated rankings tables where necessary, in line with our published corrections policy. 

Both Atılım University, Turkey, and Qatar University made mistakes when supplying institutional data. These were minor and have had no impact on their ranking positions. Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, recognised a longstanding error in the data they submitted (and signed off) for at least two years running. We temporarily suspended Trinity from the rankings to allow our data team to conduct a thorough investigation, and Trinity’s data team to source corrected data. Trinity has now been reinstated in accordance with our published corrections policy, and their ranking position corrected for the 2015-16 ranking (2015-16 ranking: joint 101st position; 2016-17 ranking: joint 131st position). 

University of Technology, Sydney supplied incorrect data, which has now been reviewed and thoroughly checked, leading to a change in their 2016-17 ranking position (from the 251-300 band to the 201-250 band). In the cases of both ESPCI Paris and Grenoble Alpes University, a restructuring of French institutions had not been reflected in the Scopus citations database when the 2016-17 rankings were calculated. The data provided to us by Elsevier therefore resulted in both institutions being excluded from the ranking. They have now been included in accordance with our published corrections policy (ESPCI Paris: 201-250 band; Grenoble Alpes University: 301-350 band).

An update to the statistical information for UK universities displayed in the table has been implemented.

The number of students has been amended to reflect the HESA Standard Rounding Methodology and is now rounded to the nearest five.

This is a display correction only and has no impact on the ranking calculation.
