The University and College Union this week condemned Reading University for the closure of its physics department, saying it made a mockery of any long-term science strategy in the UK. At an emergency meeting at the university on Wednesday, Sally Hunt, joint general secretary, said that 70 science departments had been shut in the past seven years.
