Academics have been commissioned by the BBC Trust to investigate the relationships between audiences and entertainment programming. Bill Osgerby and Anna Gough-Yates from London Metropolitan University's department of applied social sciences will look at the role of entertainment in the lives of UK citizens. The authors expect to find that audiences are not simply "passive" viewers and listeners, but engage with the media actively, creatively and meaningfully - meaning that the content of popular entertainment could potentially be understood as culturally enriching and educational, rather than simply amusing.
