About Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences was officially established in 2010 when Kaunas University of Medicine merged with the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. Today the university is the largest higher education institution specialising in biomedical sciences in Lithuania.

The university is located in Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania. Kaunas is the country’s cultural, economic and scientific centre. Kaunas is situated at the confluence of Lithuania’s two largest rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris.

There are two main academies within the university: the Medical Academy and the Veterinary Academy. The Medical Academy is subdivided into five faculties: the faculty of medicine, faculty of odontology, faculty of pharmacy, faculty of nursing, and the faculty of public health. Each faculty offers a range of courses at both undergraduate and graduate degree level.

The Veterinary Academy has a history that dates back to 1922 when it was the veterinary department within the faculty of medicine in Kaunas University. Today the academy consists of two faculties: the faculty of veterinary medicine and the faculty of animal husbandry technology.

Courses are primarily taught in Lithuanian but there are 17 study programmes available to international students in English. These include veterinary medicine, occupational therapy, and food science.

Students at the university are given the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or an entire academic year as part of the Erasmus exchange programme. The university has developed partnerships with 170 higher education institutions in more than 40 countries.
