World University Rankings 2023 by subject: arts and humanities

The arts and humanities subject table uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

The ranking highlights the universities that are leading across the following disciplines: art, performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology.

This year’s table includes 663 universities, up from 606 last year.

The top four is the same as last year, while the remainder of the top 10 features the same institutions in a slightly different order. However, two universities join the top 20 this year: China’s Peking University, which rises three places to 18th from joint 21st, and the Netherland’s Delft University of Technology, climbing 23 spots to 19th from joint 42nd.

The top university outside the US and the UK is LMU Munich, Germany, at 13th place. It was also the top university outside the UK and North America last year, but at 18th.

The highest new entry is France’s Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, in the 201-250 band.
