Large eddy simulation of shelf sea thermocline mixing processes

By utilising state-of-the-art computer modelling and analysis techniques, Dr Polton aims to investigate and quantify the physical mechanisms and processes responsible for fluxes in continental shelf seas - a transition zone between estuaries and the ocean where carbon, nutrients, sediments and other contaminants are exchanged. Despite currents and mixing on the continental shelf being dominated by tidal interaction with the seabed, significant levels of biological primary production occurs in regions that stratify during the summer months. This investigation will therefore focus on understanding the interaction between mixed layer turbulence and wind-driven inertial oscillations in the tidally strong shelf sea environment.
