Overview of Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen University, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, the University is striving to become a world-class university and global center of learning.

Built on a solid multidisciplinary foundation of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, and engineering, Sun Yat-sen University is propelled forward by the continuous pursuit of academic innovation. The University is equipped with a globally aware outlook, and has dedicated itself to being an institution that is “comprehensive, innovative, and open”. The goal of talent cultivation is to nurture students who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma and eager to serve their country. The guiding philosophy is to be oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development. The basic approach is through the construction of big research teams, big platforms and big projects. Key Facts (2016)

Outstanding disciplinary influence: Eighteen disciplines at SYSU rank among the world’s top one percent according to ESI 2016, tied for second most among mainland Chinese universities; among these disciplines, eleven rank in the world’s top 0.5 percent, and two rank in the world’s top 0.1 percent.

First-rate faculty team: SYSU counts twenty members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 42 distinguished professors of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 79 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars among its faculty. The number of high-level talents ranks in the top among Chinese universities.

High quality talent cultivation: High employment rates and degrees of job satisfaction among alumni and numerous awards in national and international academic contests are indicators which affirm SYSU’s role as a leading developer of talent in China.

Continuous increase in scientific research capacity: Annual research funding exceeded RMB 2 billion in 2016, ranked fifth among universities nationwide. As of 2016, the University has 56 projects under the “973 Program” and the Major Scientific Research Program.

National leader in international cooperation and exchange: SYSU has signed  university-level collaborative agreements with more than 240 universities from 39 countries and regions around the world, including joint platforms and institutes with universities such as FINUCI in France, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

Comprehensive medical sciences and outstanding medical service: SYSU has ten directly affiliated hospitals (seven general hospitals and three specialized hospitals), which form an extensive and exemplary medical service network. According to the 2015 Best Hospital (Comprehensive) Rankings published by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, SYSU has one hospital ranked in the top ten and four hospitals in the top fifty. Among the thirty-seven specialties appraised in the 2015 Best Specialty Rankings, five specialties at SYSU have ranked among the top five in their respective fields for seven consecutive years, with twenty specialties ranking among top ten.

Summer Program at SYSU

Since 2010, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has operated the International Summer Program (ISP) every July. The program serves as a widely recognized global gathering for international students, regular SYSU students, and professors. The program links Chinese language, politics and cultural studies, and business management, especially in relation to the Pearl River Delta and South China regions, where SYSU is located.

The program covers a wide range of topics, reflecting both the past 10 years of economic achievements and recent challenges to both the region and the country. In addition to classroom instruction, local company visits and cultural excursions are also offered in the program. Being part of this program means meeting new people, approaching new cultures, and tapping into new resources.

Students from various cultural backgrounds will be recruited to study in the same classroom. SYSU will provide a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural and cross-border atmosphere of collaborative learning, in addition to varied campus cultural activities for ISP students to broaden their international horizons and enhance their international competencies.
