The Wellcome Trust says the BSE epidemic in Britain is in rapid decline and predicts that even if culling does not take place, the epidemic will fade towards extinction by 2001. The trust adds, however, that there is uncertainty over whether the 12 reported cases of the new variant of CJD in human beings thought to be associated with BSE heralds the beginning of an epidemic in humans.
