Anglia Polytechnic University. Tony Hall, head of the design guidance research unit, has been appointed to a research chair in town planning.

University of Sussex

The following have been promoted to professorships: Deborah Cherry, senior lecturer, University of Manchester, chair in the history of art; Mike Pendlebury, experimental physics; Peter Way, American history; Paul Gough, space science; Nick Von Tunzelman, economics of space and technology; Craig Clunas, history of art. Professorial fellow: Michael Hobday, science policy research unit.

University of Wales, Cardiff

Roger Falconer, former professor of water engineering and head of the department of civil engineering at Bradford University, has been appointed to the university's first chair in environmental water management. The chair was created jointly by the university and Hyder Consulting.

University of Edinburgh

Nick Hanley, reader in the economics department at the University of Stirling, chair in agricultural resource management; Mark Steel, senior research fellow of the centre for economic research at Tilburg and associate professor in the department of econometrics, chair in economics; Klaus Ebmeier, honorary consultant psychiatrist with Lothian Health Board and senior lecturer, appointed to the second chair in the department of psychiatry.
