Sheffield Hallam University

Fellowships have been awarded to: Dorothy Dixon-Barrow, founder member of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination and the Sheffield and District Afro-Caribbean Community Association; Nick Kemp, director of the Engineering Employers' Sheffield Association, member of the Industrial Tribunal Panel, the Council of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and the university's court; Mike Rodgers, formerly with the university's school of engineering, staff governor and branch secretary of NATFHE, member of industrial tribunals for England and Wales; Graham Solley, ex-head of the university's sport and recreation service, honorary professor and member of the senate of the Romanian National University of Physical Education and Sport.

Birkbeck College, University of London

Fellowships have been awarded to: Tessa Blackstone, minister for higher education, former master of the college; Tom Blundell, William Dunn professor of biochemistry, fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, former chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council; Bernard Crick, literary editor of the Political Quarterly, emeritus professor, University of London.

Royal Holloway, University of London

Honorary fellowships have been presented to: Joan Bakewell, broadcaster and writer; Martin Holdgate, scientist, environmentalist and president of the Zoological Society of London; Dinah Nichols, director general of environmental protection at the Department of the Environment.

Honorary associateships have been presented to: Ann Steptoe, member of staff in the university's career service; Rita Townsend, departmental administrator in the history department.
