Honorary doctor of science degrees were awarded to the following on the opening day of the British Association Annual Festival of Science: Richard Sykes, director and chief executive of Glaxo-Wellcome plc and member of the advisory group on competitiveness to the President of the Board of Trade; Peter Gray, professor of physical chemistry at the university, former master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, 1988 winner of the Italgas Prize; Ben Gill, visiting professor, deputy president of the National Farmers Union, member of Agriculture and Food Research Council and later the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council; Derek Roberts, provost of University College, London, president of the British Association, fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
