Enric Banda, professor and former Spanish secretary of state for universities and research, will succeed Peter Fricker as secretary general in June 1998.

University of Durham

Douglas Davies, professor of theology at the University of Nottingham, has been appointed principal of the College of St Hild and St Bede and professor of theology; Joseph Cassidy, senior lecturer in ethics and spirituality at the University of Southampton, has been appointed principal of St Chad's College.

Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils

David Norman, assistant director of the synchrotron radiation department, has been appointed director of synchrotron radiation at the Daresbury Laboratory.

Liverpool John Moores University

Two new governors have been elected to the board: Antony Pilkington, former chairman of Pilkington plc, and Robert Wade Smith, joint managing director of the Wade Smith Retail Group.

Tameside College of Technology

Jackie Fisher, former vice principal, has been appointed principal, succeeding Tony Sanderson.
