SMITHKLINE BEECHAM LABORATORY

The annual SmithKline Beecham Laboratory Animal Welfare Prize, awarded via Research Defence Society, has been presented to Michael Festing currently at the Medical Research Council toxicology unit at the University of Leicester.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY Award for Tertiary Education, sponsored by ICI plc: Duncan Thorburn Burns, at Queen's University Belfast.

Joseph Loschmidt Prize: Henry Rzepa, reader in chemistry at Imperial College.

Award for Chemistry Analysis and Instrumentation, sponsored by Perkin-Elmer Ltd: Malcolm Smyth, dean of the faculty of science and paramedical studies at Dublin City University.

Bader Award: Ian Paterson, lecturer in chemistry at the University of Cambridge.

LONDON MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY The Polya Prize: D. E. Edmunds, University of Sussex, for his contribution to the analysis of differential equations and the influence he has exerted on the subject for more than 30 years in the United Kingdom.

Senior Berwick Prize: R. Heath-Brown, Oxford University, for his paper "Zero free regions for Dirichlet L-functions and the least prime in an arithmetic progression".

Junior Whitehead Prizes: J. Roe, Oxford University, for his work on the application and development of index theory for non-compact manifolds.

Y. Safarov of King's College London, for his work on the spectral theory of partial differential operators and microlocal analysis.
