A. Campbell, professor of biomedical ethics at Otago Medical School and director of the bioethics research centre, has been appointed to the chair in ethics in medicine; R. Fowler, chairman of the department of classical studies at the University of Waterloo, Canada, has been appointed to the Henry Overton Wills chair of Greek.

Parkes, geology; D. Smith, mechanical engineering; R. Bullock, senior research fellow, was also promoted to professor in policy studies and director of Dartington research unit.
