UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ENGLAND: Maria Tighe, consultant to the Law Society and Council for National Academic Awards, has been appointed professor and head of the department of law in the business school. Professorships have also been conferred on: Colin Fishwick, assistant dean for staff development and learning resources in the faculty of health and social sciences; John Sparrow, director of research and reader in human behaviour; Tom Muir, head of foundation studies.
Les Sparks, director of planning and architecture for Birmingham City Council, has been appointed visiting professor in the faculty of the built environment.

Esmail Amooie-Foumeny, former senior lecturer, to a developmental chair in process modelling in the department of chemical engineering; Philip Marsh, former head of the department of microbial pathogenicity at the CAMR Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research at Porton Down, to the chair of oral microbiology. From March 20, Paul Emery, senior lecturer in the department of rheumatology at the University of Birmingham, to the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council chair of rheumatology.
