UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER Honorary master of arts degrees have been awarded to: John Thaw, actor and star of Morse and Kavanagh QC; Paula Thomas, international athlete and key figure in the Sports Aid Foundation (North West); Robert Dore, local historian and retired senior history master at Altrincham County Grammar School; Geoffrey North, member of staff in the university's department of geography and a key figure in development of student welfare services.

VILNIUS GEDIMINAS TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, LITHUANIA

Patrick Dowling, vice chancellor of the University of Surrey, has been awarded a doctor honoris causa in recognition of his contribution to civil engineering in particular his collaboration on research projects connected with steel structures.

He was also appointed to the editorial board of the university's journal of academic sciences.
