Professorships: John Kusel, reader, professor of cellular biochemistry; Quintin McKellar, reader in veterinary pharmacology, professor of veterinary pharmacology; John Marsh, reader in electronics and electrical engineering, professor of optoelectronic systems; Gordon Murrary, reader in statistics, professor of medical statistics; John O'Reilly, reader in electronics and electrical engineering, professor of control engineering; Neil Spurway, senior lecturer in neuroscience and biomedical systems, professor of exercise physiology.

UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM John Moles, reader in classics; Ann Moss, reader in French; Patricia Waugh, reader in English.

QUEEN MARY AND WESTFIELD COLLEGE Peter Fitzpatrick, professor of law and social theory, University of Kent at Canterbury, chair in law; D.J. Dunstan, reader in physics at the University of Surrey, chair in experimental physics. The title of professor has been conferred on: M. Heath, senior lecturer in prosthetic dentistry, professor of gerodontology; W. Chernaik, reader in English; B. Whitttle, department of biochemical pharmacology, professor of applied pharmacology. J. Griffiths, formerly with BT Laboratories at Martlesham, professorial fellow in the department of electronic engineering.
