So, according to the Universities Human Resources group, autonomy and academic freedom are past it ("Freedom a 'former value' in admin-led sector", News, 17 May). In the same issue, Tom Palaima argues that free time and "autonomous self-directing activity" are key values for the university sector's "individual and collective good" ("Time the revelator").
I know which value set I support. Sadly, I also know which is likely to dominate.
