I welcome Bruce Macfarlane's call for the better use of emeritus professors ("Command performance", 17 November). My research has shown differences in the experiences of emeritus professors within and between universities. Some have their privileges (offices, email and such) withdrawn immediately on retirement. Some have limited support (hot-desking and shared facilities), and some have almost full support (carrying on much as before). There must be more consistent policies while making sure that younger colleagues are not affected.
