The thrust of Department for Education and Employment expenditure must be "directed at preparing people of all ages for their future working life", said the Government this week, responding to the House of Commons Education and Employment Select Committee's report on the work of the DFEE. But it acknowledged that learning should not be solely subordinated to the needs of the labour market.
