Job Purpose

The High Temperature and Materials Characterization (HTMC) Laboratory Engineer is responsible for providing high quality technical support to the HTMC Laboratory performing a broad range of duties related to its day-to-day operations. This includes equipment management, conducting testing for external stakeholders, the training of users, compliance with Khalifa University’s (KU’s) Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) regulations including the proper and safe use of equipment and materials. The HTMC Laboratory Engineer will also promote a culture of continuous improvement in the HTMC Laboratory providing excellent levels of user services to the HTMC Laboratory stakeholders.

Operational Responsibilities

Laboratory Safety

Drive practices and metrics, which ensure that the HTMC Laboratory operates in compliance with all aspects of KU’s EHS policies and procedures.

Laboratory Operations

Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and user training of the HTMC laboratory equipment. This role includes working closely with faculty, students, researchers and external stakeholders to provide technical support in high temperature materials characterization experiments, data collection, and analysis. The successful candidate will also contribute to the research and educational mission of the University by enabling high-quality high temperature materials characterization data generation.

Key Responsibilities:


	Provide a safe environment by using high temperature-based laboratory equipment by maintaining a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment as per KU EHS compliance requirements.
	Receive, inspect, install, and commission new HTMC laboratory equipment for high-temperature material testing as per manufacturer specifications.
	Conduct high temperature-based testing of material samples.
	Calibrate and maintain HTMC laboratory instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability of test data.
	Provide expertise, including experimental design, data collection and analysis, to KU researchers and external stakeholders for high temperature materials experiments.
	Assist and train faculty, students, researchers and external stakeholders in the use of HTMC laboratory equipment.
	Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to HTMC laboratory equipment operation.
	Ensure HTMC laboratory equipment are calibrated and functioning optimally, performing routine maintenance as needed.
	Maintain detailed records that are clear and concise for test data and experimental measurements, instrument logs, calibration and maintenance activities.
	Manage and schedule usage of the HTMC laboratory equipment.
	Stay updated with the latest developments in high temperature materials characterization methods and techniques.


Resource Management


	Assist in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations, including recommending capital equipment expenditures, ensure appropriate resource levels, and comply with organizational expenditure requirements.
	Supervise the inventory of commonly used laboratory supplies, maintenance parts and any other items related to HTMC laboratory operations.
	Evaluate technical requirements based on bids received from potential vendors for purchase of HTMC laboratory equipment.
	Ensure information on HTMC Laboratory website is kept up to date including all training schedules, equipment schedules and equipment descriptions.
	Guide the faculty, researchers and external stakeholders on the purchase of consumables and accessories for HTMC laboratory equipment usage.


Research Services


	Contribute to the continued innovation and development of the HTMC Laboratory program.
	Maintain liaison with faculty, researchers and external stakeholders to solve specific HTMC laboratory operating challenges and improve technical activities.


Other

Proficiency in materials thermal and mechanical characterization concepts including thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, thermal expansion and dynamic mechanical analyses.

Proficiency with thermal and mechanical characterization equipment such as (but not limited to):


	Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
	Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
	Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA)
	Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
	Laser Flash Analysis (LFA).


Knowledge of ASTM, ISO, and other relevant standards for materials thermal and mechanical characterization analyses.

Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.

Coordinate with other KU Departments and external stakeholders to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities related to the operations of the HTMC Laboratory.

Coordinate with all HTMC Laboratory stakeholders to support their experimental needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualification:


	Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering in the field of Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
	Strong experience, technical skills and familiarity with laboratory equipment and instrumentation, with application to high temperature materials thermal and mechanical characterization.
	Certification in laboratory equipment installation, calibration and maintenance preferable.
	Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect and build commercial relationships in a university environment.
	Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail


Required Experience: A minimum of 3 - 4 years relevant experience.

Research Associate / PhD Student (m/f/x)

starting October 1, 2025. The position is limited to 30 months with the option of extension to a total of 36 months and entails 75% of the full-time weekly hours. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (usually PhD).

The position is offered within the Research Training Group 2861 “Planar Carbon Lattices” (https://rtg2861-pcl.chm.tu-dresden.de), which is a collaboration between TUD Dresden University of Technology and Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), and is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Our goal is to achieve atomic-precision synthesis and exploration of new planar carbon lattices (PCLs) for next-generation quantum materials, functional precision membranes, optoelectronic and electrochemical devices, by employing advanced experimental and theoretical methods in an interdisciplinary approach bridging synthetic chemistry, condensed-matter physics, and materials science. Our research encompasses three research areas by exploring: (A) New approaches in precision synthesis of PCL, (B) PCLs’ properties and functions, and (C) Experimental and theoretical tools for their description.

Specific requirements: Strong interest and background in physical chemistry, desirable would be experience with analytical techniques, especially spectroscopy.

Job Requirements


	PhD in n Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, or allied disciplines is required. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in Large Language Models, as well as the fine-tuning and customization of AI models.
	Proven record of AI research and applications, as demonstrated by publications, patents, or software developments.
	Strong technical proficiency in AI modeling, computational tools, and programming languages relevant to AI research (e.g., Python, CUDA).


Key Competencies


	Experience working in collaborative environments, especially involving industry and academia.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager: Counselling, you will provide brief intervention counselling services to individual students, including face to face, telephone, online and crisis counselling, as well as conducting workshops which promote student mental health and wellbeing. The Counsellor also contributes to resource and policy development and works collaboratively across the University to address issues that impact on students learning outcomes.
