The Department of Computer Science at Aalto University – in the top-20 young universities worldwide – invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. We are looking for early-career scholars with an exceptional track record in human-computer interaction.

The Department of Computer Science is an internationally oriented academic department and home to world-class research in modern computer science, combining research on foundations and innovative applications. With nearly 50 professors and 500 employees from 50 countries, it is the largest department at Aalto University and the largest computer science unit in Finland.

Requirements and Process

Candidates applying to this call are considered for Assistant Professor positions only.  The selected applicant must have completed their doctoral degree before starting in the position. Applicants with more than seven years of research experience after their doctoral degree (excluding relevant career breaks) are not considered early-career and should look for more advanced positions. The doctoral degree should be in computer science, social or behavioral sciences or a related field. Exceptions could be made in extraordinary cases. (Such applicants would need to prove an equivalent experience in terms of education and research in concrete merits—course credits, awards, etc.—from these fields.) Furthermore, applicants are expected to have a good publication record in the top venues of human-computer interaction (e.g., CHI).

The applicants will be reviewed based on their research achievements in relation to their career stage, their teaching merits and activity in the scientific community; recommendation letters will also be taken into consideration. Short-listed applicants will be invited to present and discuss their research with our faculty. Evaluation at the Assistant Professor level follows the tenure track system at Aalto University. A person at any level of the tenure track system is expected to perform world‐class research, teach, advise, and otherwise advance both graduate and undergraduate education, be an active member of the international scientific community, and exhibit academic leadership.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. At the heart of this is the Faculty of Engineering, which boasts a growing research portfolio of nearly £150 million. The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering is a world-leader in research.

As part of a significant Industry-University partnership involving the University of Strathclyde – Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering, Royal Caribbean Group and DNV Classification Society, a Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC) of Excellence is being set up.
MSRC seeks to employ a Research Associate to participate in an ongoing research project. The post holder will work on the EU-funded Horizon Europe project “Safe and Climate Resilient Ports-SAFARI”. The main aim of the project is to develop a versatile digital platform to enhance port infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events. This platform will connect large port communities by establishing strong communication channels between port stakeholders and infrastructures. It will be equipped with emergency management modules, supported by operational, maintenance, and analytical components. The appointee will join a multidisciplinary international team with industrial partners from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

As a Research Associate, you will play a key role in this project as part of a team, working under the general supervision of senior colleagues. You will conduct literature reviews, collect and collate data, develop bespoke software tools, and run numerical CFD simulations. You should be able to architect and develop research software which is suitable and compliant with the marine industry standards. The ability to act as an independent researcher and contribute towards securing research funding. You should be able to manage a research team and research projects. A high level of proficiency in C++ is essential. A detailed knowledge of development/support of the following programming languages/toolsets is desirable: C# or Java,. NET, Python as well as Object Oriented and Parallel programming. You will have experience interacting with a variety of stakeholders, project partners, to lead the identification, development and implementation of IT improvements. You will have excellent troubleshooting skills, including a methodical approach to solving complex problems. You will have the capability to write required technical design documentation and test protocols. You will input as a team member to administrative activities and assist, where required, with relevant teaching and knowledge exchange activities.

To be considered for the role, you should have a good honours degree and PhD in the relevant engineering subjects. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision, and you will have an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences and publish in high-impact factor journals.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: a higher Degree in a relevant discipline, some relevant work experience, membership/working towards membership of a relevant Chartered/professional body (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities and experience of knowledge exchange related activities.

The position is fixed for 18 months with the potential to extend it further.
