As Laboratory Analytical Expert, you will support the research platform Plastics in the Environment and Society (PLENTY).

The research platform (PLENTY) investigates global plastic pollution in a holistic approach. In addition to the biotic and abiotic interactions on the surface of plastic in aquatic systems, the aim is to investigate how information and altered perception can potentially change the use of plastics in society and the associated material flows.

We are seeking a new colleague with expertise in high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) and non-target screening for analyzing tire wear additives in complex samples, including dust and environmental matrices. The role will involve developing and implementing impact screening techniques on human cell lines, contributing to the understanding of human exposure to tire wear particles.

The position is limited to 3 months.

Your future tasks:


	Perform advanced HR-MS analyses (Orbitrap, Triple Quadrupole) to identify and quantify tire wear additives and related compounds.
	Conduct non-target screening of complex samples from dust, environmental matrices, and human exposure routes.
	Coordinate laboratory workflows, ensuring accurate sample extraction and analysis.
	Develop methodologies for screening the impact of tire wear additives on human cell lines.
	Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on environmental and human exposure assessments.
	Support to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in related research projects.
	Present research findings at scientific conferences and prepare manuscripts for publication.


This is part of your personality:


	PhD in Environmental Science
	Extensive experience with Orbitrap mass spectrometry and Triple Quadrupole MS for both target and non-target screening for tire wear additives.
	Strong background in environmental analytics and sample extraction techniques.
	Proficiency in analyzing HR-MS data, especially related to tire-derived compounds.
	Experience in air sampling and analyzing micropollutants in environmental matrices.
	Strong laboratory skills in environmental chemistry, including handling and analyzing complex dust and environmental samples.
	Demonstrated ability to supervise students and collaborate on interdisciplinary research.
	Excellent scientific communication skills, with a proven record of publications and conference presentations.
	Fluency in English; fluency in German and Spanish is a plus.

The position is offered within the Research Training Group 2861 “Planar Carbon Lattices” (https://rtg2861-pcl.chm.tu-dresden.de), which is a collaboration between TUD Dresden University of Technology and Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), and is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Our goal is to achieve atomic-precision synthesis and exploration of new planar carbon lattices (PCLs) for next-generation quantum materials, functional precision membranes, optoelectronic and electrochemical devices, by employing advanced experimental and theoretical methods in an interdisciplinary approach bridging synthetic chemistry, condensed-matter physics, and materials science. Our research encompasses three research areas by exploring: (A) New approaches in precision synthesis of PCL, (B) PCLs’ properties and functions, and (C) Experimental and theoretical tools for their description.

Tasks:

	Research topic: Extension of the GW+C approach to materials


Specific requirements: We are looking for a motivated candidate, preferentially with theoretical background and strong interest in electronic-structure theory and code development. Basic programming skills are expected.

	very good university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences; Specialization in synthetic chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry/physics, condensed-matter physics or nanosciences

The Institute for Religious Education is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Protestant Theology. The vacant position as university assistant (praedoc) serves to strengthen our teaching and research portfolio. We are looking for Protestant theologians with a special interest in working on research questions in religious education.

Description

Khalifa University is seeking a dedicated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to an innovative project focused on advancing cancer diagnostics through the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers for early detection. The project centers on the analysis of alternative splicing (AS) processes that contribute to tumor development. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, developing platform-independent bioinformatics tools and algorithms for comprehensive AS analysis and classification, contributing to enhanced cancer diagnostics.

Key Responsibilities:

Algorithm and Tool Development:


	Develop and refine computational algorithms to analyze isoform-level data, incorporating advanced statistical and machine learning methods.
	Construct classification and validation models to predict cancer subtypes, addressing issues such as batch effect mitigation and data discretization.
	Design and implement the PIGExClass algorithm for clustering based on isoform expression patterns.


Data Preprocessing and Analysis:


	Conduct preprocessing and normalization of multi-omics datasets, including RNA-seq data transformation.
	Apply variance-stabilizing transformations and dimensionality reduction techniques to ensure data integrity and compatibility across different platforms.


Statistical Modeling and Batch Effect Removal:


	Develop robust statistical models for cross-platform AS analysis, incorporating supervised discretization to enhance data reliability.


Clustering and Survival Analysis:


	Utilize consensus clustering methods and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis to assess the prognostic relevance of identified cancer subtypes.


Pipeline Development and Web Interface Design:


	Integrate developed algorithms into a user-friendly bioinformatics pipeline, accessible to researchers and clinicians, for AS analysis.


Qualifications


	Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, or a related field.
	Strong programming skills in R, Python, or equivalent languages.
	Extensive experience with high-throughput sequencing data analysis, especially RNA-seq.
	Background in statistical modeling, machine learning, or data mining applied to large biological datasets.
	Familiarity with tools like RSEM, Kallisto, PCA, and various clustering algorithms.
	 Knowledge of alternative splicing mechanisms and cancer genomics.
	Experience in developing bioinformatics tools and analytical pipelines for clinical applications.
	Prior experience in high-performance computing environments and collaborative, interdisciplinary projects.
