World University Rankings 2018 by subject: engineering and technology
The 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ table for engineering and technology subjects employs the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.
It highlights the universities that are leading across electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical and general engineering subjects.
This year’s ranking has expanded to include 500 institutions, up from 100 last year, while the threshold for the proportion of staff working in the relevant disciplines has decreased.

Universities in Asia are among the stand-out performers in this year’s table. China’s Peking University makes the top 10 for the first time in the eight-year history of the table, after climbing five places to seventh, becoming Asia’s number one university for engineer and technology subjects. The National University of Singapore is one behind at eighth.
Overall a staggering 132 universities in Asia make the top 500, meaning that the continent now has more world-class institutions for engineering and technology than North America (127).
But the table is still led by universities in the US: Stanford University is number one, while its neighbour the California Institute of Technology is second.
