The S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a Research Scientist to work on automation and information technologies applied to construction and civil infrastructure.

About the S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group

The S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group is a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group led by Prof. Borja García de Soto. The core topics of the S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group are Sustainable and resilient construction, Modularization and lean construction, Artificial intelligence, Robotic systems and automation, Technology integration and information modeling.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a Ph.D. in civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related field. Expertise in ROS and simulation platforms is required. Additionally, candidates should have experience with ROS2 and be familiar with the development of AI models, large language models (LLMs), and the use of machine learning (ML) techniques. Excellent communication skills in English and scientific creativity are essential. The applicant should have a strong publication record and be capable of supporting grant writing and proposal development to secure funding for research initiatives. Furthermore, extensive experience in laboratory management and research operations, along with in-depth knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in laboratory environments, is required. The ideal candidate will also possess strong organizational skills, a deep understanding of the scientific research process, and the ability to foster a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Successful candidates will also be actively involved in embedding the teaching of specific writing and speaking skills in content modules across academic years and programmes in different disciplines. CPC faculty are also deeply involved in industry transformation through applied research in communication in the disciplines. They are also provided with paid leave to undertake consultancy work with industry and/or spend time attached with industry. 

We will prioritise collegiate and team-spirited candidates with either (a) an earned PhD or equivalent from a reputable university with specialisation in applied linguistics, science communication or related discipline and some relevant work experience.

Applications are invited for appointment as Research Officer (RO)/Assistant Research Officer (ARO) in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine (Ref.: 530461), to commence as soon as possible, on a one-year temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.

The appointee will participate in a large-scale multidisciplinary research and community youth mental health project. It is Hong Kong’s first territory-wide initiative to build a youth-specific and youth-friendly mental health platform that provides timely preventive intervention to youth with distress and risk for mental health deterioration. The project will transform current youth services and provide a framework for future developments in youth mental health and youth-focused services both locally and internationally.

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in psychology, social sciences, public health, sociology, statistics or a related discipline and at least 5 years of relevant work experience. A strong background in psychology or community research are preferred.  Applicants should have excellent communication skills, experience in knowledge sharing, and the ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team. Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as ARO.  He/She will work closely with the unit leader to develop and implement a strategic plan; collaborate with local and international youth mental health experts to evaluate project components and model; prepare reports; analyse data; train and supervise junior research staff; and perform other duties as assigned.
