The Nonlinear Systems and Control group (https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-electrical-engineering-and-automation/nonlinear-systems-and-control) at Aalto University explores synergies between nonlinear control theory and physics informed machine learning to provide formal guarantees on performance, safety, and robustness of robotic and learning-enabled systems. The research group is seeking a talented PhD student with strong interest in nonlinear stability theory, modeling & identification, optimal control, certifiably safe & robust control, and learning for dynamics & control.

The main task of the PhD student will be to develop sound data-driven methodologies for learning control policies with provable guarantees on performance and safety, for example, through the efficient computation of Lyapunov and barrier functions, forward and backward reachable sets, optimal value functions etc. The broad goal is to build upon recent developments in learning Operator Theoretic representations of dynamical systems that focus on model interpretability, scalability to high dimensions, and data efficiency. The exact direction of the research is chosen depending on your experience and interests. Please relate clearly to some of the research topics in your Letter of Motivation.

Outstanding researchers from the areas of Control Engineering, Robotics, Machine Learning, AI, and related areas including Optimization, Mathematics and Physics are welcome to apply. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research and should have strong analytical skills as well as be fluent in spoken and written English. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with the vibrant Aalto research community, including the Intelligent Robotics group and the Mobile Robotics group, as well as the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence. The group also actively collaborates internationally with top institutions in the US and Sweden.

WE OFFER

The position will be filled for a period of 4 years (2 + 2). The starting date is in January 2025 or as mutually agreed. The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary for a PhD student is 3000 EUR/month.

About the role

The University of Surrey Campus Services Catering owns and manages its own inhouse campus catering outlets and conference services.

The catering facilities include several restaurants, coffee shops, and bar services, serving a range of menu choices and beverage offerings, including all internal and external event catering. We currently have an Assistant Manager vacancy at our Wates House Bar.

About you

As part of the Wates House Team and under the guidance of the Trade Licenses Manager, this role has responsibility for the operational day-to-day management of the Wates House Student Bar, including short term operational priorities and proposing / implementing improvements to current working methods to achieve objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for operational compliance with food safety and health and safety procedures, management of staff rotas, and placing orders for the bar.

This position will be responsible for staff training, ensuring efficient, engaging, and friendly customer service, and motivating a team of individuals to deliver excellent service. This is a busy, fast paced environment. This position will manage a robust, creative, and successful catering operation on a 7 day a week schedule.

The Person

We are looking for a qualified Phd/MSc engineer with practical experience in delivery of advanced geomaterials/materials science or engineering characterization and analysis programs. Experience in working on CT-based geo-material science applications is highly desirable. The person should have experience in project management of scientific or research projects, involving detailed planning and delivery of project proposals and other documents related to project management and delivery. A strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to quickly develop productive, professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. Highly developed organizational skills and effective self-management are key.

About the Role

Appointees at Level D (Associate Professor) will have a distinguished track record of research, demonstrated by publications in high-impact journals, successful grant applications, and links with external bodies including industry, government, and community. They will also be expected to have experience in research training at the Honours and postgraduate levels, as well as in postgraduate coursework. They will demonstrate outstanding scholarly and professional achievement in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, including but not limited to semiconductor technology, with national or international standing in a research area that complements the School’s strengths. The candidate will have a proven ability to attract competitive research funding. They will possess demonstrated skills in leading a team and collaborating effectively with senior school management and other members of a multi-disciplinary team to develop a program of Electrical/Electronic Engineering research and translate research findings into practice. Experience in supervising research students is essential. The candidate will also have extensive ability to teach in related discipline areas such as Electronics (digital and/or analogue), semiconductor devices, control systems, mechatronics, and Power Electronics.
