Description

The Robot Learning & Control laboratory in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate with a strong expertise in learning-based control for robotics, with a particular focus on ensuring passivity and stability during interactions with humans and/or the environment. This position aims to advance the development of control algorithms that maintain safety, stability, and robustness in robotic systems, while leveraging machine learning alongside differential geometry to enhance adaptability and performance. The research will emphasize the integration of Lyapunov stability, passivity-based control, variable impedance control, and imitation or exploration-based learning, particularly in scenarios involving human interaction and environmental complexities.

The successful applicant will engage in cutting-edge research with the following objectives:

Integration of Machine Learning and Differential Geometry: Develop and refine control algorithms that combine machine learning techniques with differential geometric methods to enhance the adaptability and efficiency of robotic systems in dynamic and unpredictable environments.

Passivity and Stability in Human-Environment Interaction: Focus on creating control strategies that ensure stability, which is crucial for safe and stable operations during human-robot interactions and in complex environmental settings.

Variable Impedance Control: Implement variable impedance control strategies to allow robots to dynamically adjust their stiffness and damping properties, improving interaction safety and efficiency in scenarios that require close human-robot collaboration or precise environmental manipulation.

Imitation and Exploration-Based Learning: Proficiency in applying imitation learning and/or exploration-based learning to optimize control policies, enabling robots to learn from human demonstrations and environmental interactions.

Qualifications:


	Applicants must have a PhD in Robotics, Control Theory, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a     closely related field, with a strong focus on robot control, machine learning, and differential geometry.
	Demonstrated experience in developing advanced control and learning algorithms, particularly in the context of human-robot interaction, in addition to an experience in working with real robotic manipulator.
	A strong publication record in high-impact journals and conferences (e.g., T-RO, IJRR, RA-L, RAS, IROS, ICRA, CDC, etc.), showcasing your expertise.
	Proficiency in programming languages and tools commonly used in robotics, such as C , MATLAB, Python, and ROS.
	Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment.

The role

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow (RF) position for 10 months within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), University of Surrey, UK, to work on generative AI for social music game design. 

The post is funded by Research England and Surrey County Council, under the GAIN program. The project is a collaboration with industry partner Record Games. The focus will be to develop generative machine learning models and signal processing algorithms for music sound generation. This work is built on the recent contributions of the CVSSP audio team in generative AI models for audio generation, such as AudioLDM and AudioLDM2, with a focus on exploring the performance of using such models for music instrument sound generation and style transfer (e.g. from singing voice to trumpet sound). 

The post-holder will be based in CVSSP, and work under the direction of the Principal Investigator Prof Wenwu Wang, in collaboration with the industrial partner.

CVSSP is an International Centre of Excellence for research in Audio-Visual Machine Perception and AI, with over 180 researchers. The Centre has state-of-the-art audio and video capture and analysis facilities supporting research in real-time video and audio processing and visualisation. CVSSP has a compute facility with 1000 CPUs, 200 GPUs and >2PB of high-speed secure storage. 

About you

The post-holder is expected to have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in generative AI, acoustic signal processing, cross-modal processing among audio and text, machine learning, or a related area in electronic engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, and statistics. The post-holder is expected to have strong analytical skills and programming skills such as Python, C/C++, or Matlab.  Preference will be given to those who have experience on generative AI models, audio generation, cross modal translations (such as, text to audio), but candidates who have experience in machine learning and audio signal processing are welcome to apply.

The Global Mobility Office is a student-facing and external-facing professional services team of eleven. This is an opportunity to join a small, close, centralised professional services team providing inbound and outbound study and work abroad lifecycle support and reporting, mobility partnership agreement negotiation and management, and administration of Erasmus, Turing and the Staff International Exchange Programme, in pursuance of the university’s Education and International strategies.

We are part of the Students & Education Directorate, a collection of wide-ranging professional services in place to support King’s students and their education. About The Role

The Global Mobility Officer (Increasing Opportunities) works with the Global Mobility Officer (Outgoing Student Support) and Global Mobility Senior Officer (Outgoing Students Co-ordinator) to facilitate King’s students spending a period abroad as part of their degree or as an extra-curricular opportunity. The role combines programme administration, student support and international relationship liaison. 

The Global Mobility Officer (Increasing Opportunities) has operational responsibility for a set of tasks and processes within the Global Mobility Office’s wider remit. They work within and across multiple teams at the university, engaging with a wide range of colleagues, and they contribute to activities which positively impact the student experience. This includes assisting with the planning, administration and delivery of outgoing study and work abroad opportunities; responding sensitively to student enquiries ensuring students experience consistent support pre-, during, and post-mobility; nominating and then supporting outgoing King’s students with their applications to partner universities and work placements, particularly those in Europe; troubleshooting and liaising as necessary with external organisations; and providing support for and contributing to widening outgoing mobility participation and funding administration as well as broader diversity and inclusion activities for under-represented cohorts.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
