Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) – originally known as Kaohsiung Medical College – was established in 1954. It was the first private medical university in the Sanmin District in Taiwan, and became an important springboard for skilled medical professionals.
KMU became a university in 1999. There is now a wide range of medical related courses, and the facilities both for basic and clinical research are sufficient and of a good quality.
The university consists of six colleges: medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, health science, and the life sciences since then. Kaohsiung Medical University has laid a solid foundation as a leading medical institution.
The university is located in the city centre of Kaohsiung, a world-class industrial port city and second biggest in Taiwan, which has the attractions and excitement that city life offers to students.
KMU has established links with eleven major research centres and has developed partnerships with other universities and industries in Taiwan and across the world. For instance, the MedicoGenomic Research Center of Kaohsiung Medical University has determined molecular markers for tumors which can be used for clinical tests.
KMU is the only medical university in Taiwan that was honoured as a model for teaching excellence in 2013 by the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) and all departments have been accredited by Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT).
The university has three affiliated teaching hospitals and since the founding of KMU, and moer than 25 national awards for Outstanding Contribution to Medical Services have been given to KMU alumni.
Notable alumni include Hsu Shu-ching, a Taiwanese weightlifter who won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, Chang Wen-ing, a Taiwanese politician and former mayor of Taichung, Taiwan, and Ho Chi-kung, the deputy minister of health and Welfare of the Republic of China.
