Your professional field of activity: The selected candidate will be part of the 'Evolutionary Morphology Research Group' (EvoMorRG; Chair Palaeobiology with Special Emphasis on Vertebrate Palaeontology). The 'Evolutionary Morphology Research Group' at the Department of Palaeontology is an interdisciplinary research team working at the interface between palaeobiology and evolutionary developmental biology of vertebrates for better understanding the evolutionary history of vertebrates (see also www.evomorg.org). The members of the 'EvoMoRG' are dedicated to the scientific research of vertebrates of past geological periods and today, and their evolutionary and developmental history through time. Our team currently consists of the head of 'EvoMoRG', a lab manager, three postdocs, five Doctoral, 13 Master, and five Bachelor students. As a university assistant predoctoral (Doctoral student), you conduct a research project that complements research in our group and that ultimately will lead to a PhD degree. The primary objective of our research is to increase our understanding of the development and evolution of morphological traits of gnathostomes within a phylogenetic context. We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. You work on your cumulative dissertation and its completion within three years. You are assisting in laboratory organization and maintenance, especially of our aquarium infrastructure, where we keep various cartilaginous and bony fishes. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You take on administrative tasks in research and teaching. You are willing to engage in international and (depending on the project) interdisciplinary or applied research. You are willing to attend national and international conferences to present your research results, and workshops to gain additional scoial and professional skills. This is part of your personality: Diploma or master degree in organismal Biology or Geology/Palaeontology completed; certificate / degree provided in due time before the start of the contract. Good knowledge in the areas of zoology, vertebrate paleobiology and evolution. Mandatory are analytical skills in phylogenetic methods, R Cran, and geometric morphometrics. Desirable but not strictly required are knowledge and application of Amira and/or Drishti software packages for reconstructing CT data. Basic knowledge about machine learning is of advantage. Very good English skills. High motivation to strive for scientific excellence and to publish research results of high quality. You are a team player with high social and communicative competence. You are able to work independently. You have at least basic experience in academic writing. You are keen to participate in conferences and research trips. The Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised individual to work on a two-year research programme on hydration and health. The successful candidate will work alongside Professor Neil Walsh and his team on an industry-funded research programme extending recently published work. You will be expected to assist in all aspects of the programme of work, including: study design; ethical approval; the day-to-day running and administration of the research project; the implementation of interventions; assisting in the collection and interpretation of data; and the production of technical reports and manuscripts for publication. You will hold a good honours degree (First or 2.1) in a relevant subject area e.g., nutrition, human physiology, health psychology, exercise science. Experience of conducting high quality research is essential. A master’s postgraduate degree is desirable, as is experience of biological sample collection (e.g., venous blood), handling, storage (in accordance with GLP), biochemical analysis and an awareness of quality control techniques. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritise a continuously demanding workload. The Role and Department The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) is responsible for coordinating philanthropy, alumni and supporter engagement, advancement services, and supporter communications on behalf of the University. DARO works with colleges, academic departments, research centres and institutes, wider student experience partners, and professional departments to engage over 200,000 alumni and supporters around the world. DARO is part of Advancement, along with Marketing and Communications, and contributes to the enhancement of Durham University's reputation as globally outstanding, inclusive, and forward-looking. We are an ambitious and committed team with a collaborative and collegiate culture. The Development Team within DARO is ultimately responsible for: soliciting major and principal donations from alumni, philanthropists, corporations, trusts and foundations and other charitable bodies; stewarding major and principal donors through reports, presentations, events and face-to-face meetings; meeting with gift beneficiaries to collate and produce gift impact reporting materials; hosting and devising engagement opportunities for existing and prospective benefactors on campus; and managing relationships with high-level stakeholders on behalf of the University. The Development Manager will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donations of £10,000 - £100,000. The post-holder's portfolio will be centred around individual donors, but may also include trusts and foundations, legacy and planned giving prospects, corporate donors/sponsors, and other philanthropic organisations. The Development Manager will play a critical role in the delivery of Durham's bicentenary campaign, known as Durham 200. Durham 200 is a major philanthropic initiative in recognition of the University's 200th anniversary in 2032, which seeks to create a step-change in philanthropic income and increase significantly the impact of giving to Durham. The post-holder must be versatile and able to work closely with senior University leaders, prominent and public figures, major benefactors and advocates, and senior volunteers in multiple capacities which facilitate the development of major donations and the advancement of Durham University. This is a hybrid role based in Durham, with a requirement to be on site at least two days per week and a considerable amount of travel within the UK and potentially further afield.
