About the Role

You will be responsible for developing, delivering, and coordinating courses within the Academic Unit’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Management disciplines, including general management, international business, and human resource management. Additionally, you will contribute to curriculum development and the continuous improvement of teaching practices across the Academic Unit.

Core Responsibilities


	Maintaining the quality of Unit courses through course review and development
	Investigate and develop innovative teaching methods and the initiation and development of high-quality materials to support student learning and engagement
	Providing academic counselling and advice to students in a professional and timely manner
	Support the Academic Unit’s and University’s teaching and learning initiatives in ways that will enhance the student experience
	Contribute to scholarly activity, independently and/or as a member of a team, which enhances scholarly teaching practice and maintains currency with the discipline/profession


Essential Skills and Experience


	Relevant doctoral degree/studies or a postgraduate qualification (at least one level higher than the program taught) and professional experience
	Skills in contemporary teaching, learning and assessment with a demonstrated ability to undertake teaching duties including the design and preparation of teaching activities and resources
	Current and relevant knowledge of developments in the discipline informed by continuing scholarship and/or continuing industry engagement
	High level written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with team members, external parties and colleagues

The role

The University offers a unique opportunity for an individual with excellent research and project management skills to join the Doctoral College. The successful applicant will work with another research fellow on this project, with the support of senior advisors, to plan and deliver a research programme focussed on improving race equity in postgraduate research and addressing structural inequalities in higher education. 

The successful applicant will work alongside colleagues within the Doctoral College, the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion team and the Surrey Institute of Education to deliver an exciting programme to improve access and participation for Black British postgraduate students. The programme focuses on addressing inequalities within postgraduate research and therefore someone with a strong understanding of the impact of structural inequalities within higher education would be an asset to the team. The programme aims to positively impact all stages of the postgraduate lifecycle from undergraduate pipeline to postgraduate experience and preparation for a career, therefore, experience of researching, working, or studying in postgraduate education is essential. 

The post holder take responsibility for implementation of the research programme, including planning and executing programme delivery, data analysis, and evaluation. The post holder will also contribute to pastoral support for Black British doctoral students within the Doctoral College by drawing on understanding of ethnic minority experiences, therefore lived experience of being a postgraduate from a Black or other racialised minority group in postgraduate education would bring important insight to the role.

The role will require project management skills to deliver a multicomponent programme, as well as experience in the evaluation of interventions (ideally with mixed-methods research experience from a social science background). The role will involve liaison with staff and students across the University, as well as external stakeholders and research partners.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and pioneering Doctoral College. The Doctoral College at the University of Surrey was established in December 2016 and since has become recognised nationally for the excellent support it provides to postgraduate researchers.

About you

The ideal applicant will have:


	A PhD, or be nearing submission of their PhD, or equivalent research experience in a relevant subject, such as. education, pedagogy, psychology, social science, or any related discipline
	Experience of designing, conducting, analysing and disseminating qualitative and/or quantitative and/or mixed methods research
	The ability to project-manage multiple tasks and demonstrate excellent project management skills
	The ability to work to deadlines, both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary research team
	A commitment to continuous professional development.

About the area

The Department of Environmental Science is responsible for the delivery of undergraduate majors in Environmental Science including teaching responsibilities in associated areas such as Ecology, Geography and Environmental Management. Founded in 1999, the Department (https://www.ln.edu.hk/cultural/) is the forerunner of offering a BA degree in Cultural Studies in Hong Kong. Our Master of Cultural Studies Programme, launched in 2003, gives students from mixed academic and working backgrounds the opportunity to reflect on and devise alternative ways to approach their ongoing practices. Our Research Postgraduate Programmes (MPhil & PhD) train aspiring researchers to develop in-depth inquiry into specific areas of interest. The programmes are designed to nurture global citizens with interdisciplinary, avant-garde, critical, and reflexive knowledge in the digital age.

We promote interdisciplinary research that foregrounds new ideas and drives societal changes. General Requirements

The appointee must have a strong background in Cultural Studies and related areas and proven teaching and research ability in the following areas: techno culture, social and cultural innovation, commons and community, youth culture, urban studies, and cultures of everyday life.

The appointed candidate will be a committed academic with a record of research and scholarship of international stature who will be able to demonstrate commitment to the vision and orientation of the Department and the University. The appointee should demonstrate a track record of quality publications and grants-based research in areas relevant to the department’s profile. Solid experience in administrative leadership would be preferable.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment with consideration for substantiation. Strong candidates will be considered for substantiation.
