Applications are invited for appointment as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Ref.: 528842), to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, with at least two years’ work experience or teaching experience in mechanical engineering, microelectronic engineering, or a relevant area. They should demonstrate accomplishments in teaching and contributions in knowledge exchange, curriculum development, pedagogy and administrative services. The Department places emphasis on opportunities in experiential learning, and proven capability to implement these approaches will be a definite advantage, especially on microelectronic engineering, microfabrication processes, and advanced manufacturing. Those with experience/proficiency in nanofabrication, cleanroom operations, consumer electronic product design, advanced electronic packaging, and smart materials will have higher priority.

Taught postgraduate programs now occupy a significant sector of the educational initiatives of the Department.  The appointee will  be responsible for quality teaching in relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervision of student projects, course design and curriculum development and active participation in knowledge exchange.   He/She is alsoexpected to participate in administrative services for the Department’s taught postgraduate programs.  For those who have more than five years of teaching experience at the tertiary level or working experience in an equivalent professional setting and demonstrate good teaching skills preferably with experience in curriculum development may be considered for the Senior Lecturer position.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.

The Department of Applied Physics is inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Superconducting Qubits and Circuit QED. Our research group is part of the effort in nanoelectronics in the Low Temperature Laboratory, Department of Applied Physics. The group is doing research in such fields as quantum information and quantum-level effects in superconducting devices, quantum coherent matter, and interaction of electromagnetic fields with nano-structured materials. Doctoral Researcher to study coherent interaction-free measurements using Superconducting Qubits and Circuit QED

We have a four-year Doctoral Researcher position funded by the Research Council of Finland. The position is primarily focused on coherent interaction-free measurements for the efficient detection of microwave photons, which can have a wide range of applications in the indirect capturing of the signatures of axions, laying the foundation for a new type of microwave spectrometer, counterfactual quantum computation, and secure quantum communication. This project utilizes superconducting quantum circuits as an experimental platform – presently one of the most promising platforms for future quantum computers and quantum simulators. This field of research has seen tremendous development in recent times, and currently offers plenty of exciting opportunities for developing yourself as a quantum physicist.

Your role and goals

You will work in the field of Superconducting Qubits and Circuit QED. Your project will focus on performing microwave measurements using dilution refrigerator, device fabrication using nano-fabrication techniques, and programming using Matlab, Python, Mathematica etc. for the simulations. Successful candidate should also have a strong aptitude towards research and ability to analyse and interpret the results.

Your network and team

The research will be conducted in the ‘Superconducting Qubits and Circuit QED (KVANTTI) group’ at the Department of Applied Physics, Aalto University, Finland, under the supervision of Academy Research Fellow Dr. Shruti Dogra and the group leader Prof. Sorin Paraoanu.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a bright, motivated researcher to join our team. You should have excellent study records in physics or related disciplines up to the level of MSc. Prior laboratory experience in the fields of mesoscopic physics, nanoelectronics, cryogenics, microwave electronics, circuit design, clean-room techniques, and instrument programming is a plus but not required.

Requirements


	Master's degree (or soon to be obtained) in physics, or a related field with a strong base in quantum physics.
	Self motivation and enthusiasm to pursue research. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently as well as in a team.
	Prior experience in a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is a plus.
	Experience using experimental setups or developing and testing experimental setups would be beneficial.


A successful candidate should demonstrate capability and willingness to learn new methods and have good written and oral communication skills in English (Finnish language is not required). What we offer

You will be trained to perform advanced experimental research and develop theoretical models. You will have full access to the OtaNano research infrastructure for nano- and micro- technologies, comprising state-of-the-art equipment in nanofabrication, cryogenics, microscopy, and electronics. OtaNano operates the largest clean room in Northern Europe and our Low Temperature Laboratory (where the group is located) leverages unmatched expertise in cryogenics and low-noise measurements. The skills that you will acquire during your doctoral studies are currently in very high demand both in academia and in high-tech companies. You will be encouraged to build your scientific reputation by networking with our national and international collaborators, writing manuscripts, and participating in conferences to present your results.

The total duration of Ph.D. studies is four years. The contract will be made initially for two years, then extended to another two years after a successful mid-term progress review. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary of the selected doctoral candidate in this project is approximately 2700 EUR/month (gross), and it increases as you progress in your research and studies. Description

The Social Machines and Robotics (SMART) Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi focuses on the development of socially intelligent machines (computer applications, robots, Virtual Agents) that are capable of interacting and communicating in a natural way with humans, expressing through their figure a high degree of social intelligence, with a focus on applications in education and healthcare.

The SMART lab seeks to recruit a motivated and passionate postdoctoral associate to work under the supervision of Dr. Hanan Salam on the topics: 1) Computational models for human social behavior perception, 2) Social behavior generation for machines, 3) Application of Artificial Social Intelligence for healthcare or education. The researcher will work on the development of new approaches in areas:


	Personalized models for human social behavior perception by machines;
	Multimodal machine learning approaches for social and affective computing tasks;
	Bias detection and mitigation in social and affective computing tasks;
	Social machines and robots as tools for the diagnosis and therapy of individuals affected by neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. ADHD, Autism, Depression, Bipolar disorder, etc.).


Key Responsibilities:

Research


	Support the supervisor in developing and implementing the SMART lab research agenda;
	Conduct high-quality and innovative research in the areas of focus of the lab;
	Propose novel high-impact ideas based on gaps and limitations of the state-of-the-art (SOTA);
	Design and implement experiments to compare proposed work with SOTA baselines;
	Publish research findings in high-impact journals and conferences;
	Communicate and present research findings at international academic conferences;
	Create, maintain, and document high-quality research code for reproducibility;
	Assist the supervisor in the preparation of grant applications;
	Co-supervise PhD students and undergraduate research assistants (as appropriate);
	Collaborate with researchers internationally and locally on topics within the focus area of the lab.


Training & professional development*


	Attend trainings and workshops for career development;
	Actively participate in events and committees at NYU Abu Dhabi, such as the Postdoctoral Council Steering Committee;
	Gain experience in applying for local research grants (subject to eligibility);
	Transition to independence to pursue a career of choosing following the appointment.


* The researcher will create a personalized training and development plan with the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications


	Currently has or is in the process of completing a PhD, MD/PhD, DPhil or equivalent terminal degree from a recognized institution (no more than 5 years since completing the doctoral degree);
	Relevant research experience in at least one of the following: Social Robotics, human-robot interaction, human-computer interaction, Machine Learning, Affective Computing, Social Signal Processing, Computer Vision and speech processing, multimodal signals processing and fusion;
	Proficient programming experience in Python and libraries (e.g., Pytorch, TensorFlow) with several years of practice;
	First-author peer-reviewed published papers (or under review);
	Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written communication)
	Willingness and capacity to work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students
	Self-motivated with an ability to work independently and in a team to get the work done
	Willingness to learn and confront new challenges.


Preferred Qualifications


	Outstanding robotic programming skills and being familiar with frameworks such as ROS and/or YARP.
	 Prior experience with social robotics, development of experimental setups, and experimental testing;
	Deep knowledge of Deep Learning techniques and experience in  conducting experiments for training and evaluating deep neural networks.

About the role

The Innovation & Impact team form part of the Research, Innovation, and Impact (RII) division. The division supports the research, innovation, and impact activity across the University. The role of iTEK Senior Project Officer reports to the Student Enterprise Manager within the Innovation & Impact Team.

Tasked with managing the successful delivery of the iTEK programme, the iTEK Senior Project Officer will promote the new intrapreneurial pathway to students, attracting, recruiting, and supporting students through the iTEK programme. They will proactively identify small and medium sized organisations to provide innovation challenges, building relationships, scoping knowledge exchange projects, and supporting project execution. 

This role is 0.5 FTE fixed term to 31/07/25. Part of this role will be to aim to secure funding to support the running of the iTEK programme beyond this period.

About you

We are looking for someone who can communicate effectively with researchers, business partners, and students, and provide advice and guidance. You will be experienced in programme management and project delivery. Tasks will include helping business partners to create a project brief which fits the iTEK objectives and matches up with the embedded course modules, matching and placing students to projects, controlling programme documentation, finance, contracts, and administrative process requirements.
