The role

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow (RF) position for 10 months within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), University of Surrey, UK, to work on generative AI for social music game design. 

The post is funded by Research England and Surrey County Council, under the GAIN program. The project is a collaboration with industry partner Record Games. The focus will be to develop generative machine learning models and signal processing algorithms for music sound generation. This work is built on the recent contributions of the CVSSP audio team in generative AI models for audio generation, such as AudioLDM and AudioLDM2, with a focus on exploring the performance of using such models for music instrument sound generation and style transfer (e.g. from singing voice to trumpet sound). 

The post-holder will be based in CVSSP, and work under the direction of the Principal Investigator Prof Wenwu Wang, in collaboration with the industrial partner.

CVSSP is an International Centre of Excellence for research in Audio-Visual Machine Perception and AI, with over 180 researchers. The Centre has state-of-the-art audio and video capture and analysis facilities supporting research in real-time video and audio processing and visualisation. CVSSP has a compute facility with 1000 CPUs, 200 GPUs and >2PB of high-speed secure storage. 

About you

The post-holder is expected to have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in generative AI, acoustic signal processing, cross-modal processing among audio and text, machine learning, or a related area in electronic engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, and statistics. The post-holder is expected to have strong analytical skills and programming skills such as Python, C/C++, or Matlab.  Preference will be given to those who have experience on generative AI models, audio generation, cross modal translations (such as, text to audio), but candidates who have experience in machine learning and audio signal processing are welcome to apply.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a
GRANT FUNDED POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN CONSERVATION SCIENCE starting from November 2024 or as agreed. The Postdoctoral Researcher will receive a 2-year scholarship funded by the Kone foundation. This position is grant funded only; it does not establish an employment relationship with the University of Helsinki.

Position description

The successful applicant should contribute to one or more of the research themes of the project “The interplay between funding and governance factors in achieving sustainable conservation outcomes for protected areas in the tropics” financed by the Kone foundation. The principal investigator (PI) of the project is Associate Professor Johanna Eklund. The project aims to provide insight into what are the enabling factors needed to attain sustainable conservation outcomes for protected areas in the long term. The project will use expert elicitation techniques to engage with local stakeholders and experts and identify what they perceive as important in implementing successful conservation policies. The work will include identifying both remote factors (such as institutional constraints) and proximate factors (actions directly related to protected areas). The project uses novel attribution methods, previously not used in conservation science, to explore causalities. The analytical framework will build on a Qualitative Comparative Analysis – allowing to study how certain factors in their specific combinations with other factors influence an outcome and will require defining and framing the candidate conditions, their thresholds, and the truth tables of the method in collaboration with local protected area stakeholders and experts.

Responsibilities as a grant funded postdoctoral researcher

The appointed researcher will lead one of the planned working packages of the project and this will entail to design the data collection, conduct stakeholder focus groups and workshops, to analyze data using a Qualitative Comparative Analyses framework, and publish the findings in high level journals in the field. The position will require familiarity analyzing both qualitative and spatial quantitative data (GIS, focus groups, interviews, workshops), but the work will be supported by a part time research assistant.

Requirements and eligibility criteria

The postdoctoral researcher must have a doctoral degree in conservation science, geography, policy analysis, or a related field. It is expected that applicants have experience with mixed-methods and working with both qualitative and quantitative data and analysis. Previous experience with impact evaluation methods in conservation, and especially qualitative attribution methods is a merit. As the position will require leading one of the project work packages, excellent organizational, social, and collaborative skills are also required. Familiarity with different types of stakeholder engagement activities is considered a merit. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are also expected, and so is a track record of being able to publish scientific articles.

The University offers a unique opportunity for an individual with excellent research and project management skills to join the Doctoral College. The successful applicant will work with another research fellow on this project, with the support of senior advisors, to plan and deliver a research programme focussed on improving race equity in postgraduate research and addressing structural inequalities in higher education. 

The successful applicant will work alongside colleagues within the Doctoral College, the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion team and the Surrey Institute of Education to deliver an exciting programme to improve access and participation for Black British postgraduate students. The programme focuses on addressing inequalities within postgraduate research and therefore someone with a strong understanding of the impact of structural inequalities within higher education would be an asset to the team. The programme aims to positively impact all stages of the postgraduate lifecycle from undergraduate pipeline to postgraduate experience and preparation for a career, therefore, experience of researching, working, or studying in postgraduate education is essential. 

The post holder take responsibility for implementation of the research programme, including planning and executing programme delivery, data analysis, and evaluation. The post holder will also contribute to pastoral support for Black British doctoral students within the Doctoral College by drawing on understanding of ethnic minority experiences, therefore lived experience of being a postgraduate from a Black or other racialised minority group in postgraduate education would bring important insight to the role.

The role will require project management skills to deliver a multicomponent programme, as well as experience in the evaluation of interventions (ideally with mixed-methods research experience from a social science background). The role will involve liaison with staff and students across the University, as well as external stakeholders and research partners.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and pioneering Doctoral College. The Doctoral College at the University of Surrey was established in December 2016 and since has become recognised nationally for the excellent support it provides to postgraduate researchers.

The Philosophy Department at King’s College London is seeking an outstanding philosopher with research expertise and teaching experience in Ethics.

 

The successful candidate will lead or direct their own original and independent programme of research at an international standard. This is a full time, fixed term post (18 months).

King's College London

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCER / DOCTORAL RESEARCHER

for a fixed term position starting on 1 January 2025, or as agreed. The position is suited either for a Doctoral researcher, or for a Postdoctoral researcher. A Doctoral researcher is expected to work full time on the PhD thesis and to complete their thesis in three years.

The employment will extend over a period of 2-3 years, depending on the starting date of the contract and the type of the position (shorter for a Postdoctoral researcher, longer for a Doctoral researcher).

The position is located at the Department of Forest Sciences in the research group Forest Bioeconomy, Business, and Sustainability (FBBS). The position connects with the following projects:


	Reduced emissions through wood use: Mitigation pathways towards carbon neutrality (REDEEM, funded by the Research Council of Finland)
	Navigating European Forests and Forest Bioeconomy Sustainably to EU Climate Neutrality (ForestNavigator, coordinated by IIASA, funded by European Commission H2020)


REDEEM investigates the scale and timing of net greenhouse gas emissions in the event of an expanding bioeconomy and aims at realistic estimates of the forest sector’s contribution to the Paris Agreement by considering market dynamics and alternative carbon neutrality pathways. The project combines several methodological approaches and involves life cycle assessment (LCA), econometric analysis, simulation modelling, and future-oriented market research.

ForestNavigator assesses the climate change mitigation potential of European forests and forest-based sector through modelling of policy pathways, informing the public authorities on the most suitable approaches to forest policy and bioeconomy. The project relies on an integrated policy modelling framework for the EU forests and forest bioeconomy covering all relevant climate impacts and feedbacks, mitigation strategies, and forest ecosystem services. The University of Helsinki takes responsibility in assessing the future outlook of the European forest product markets and the climate change mitigation potential associated with industrial wood uses.

We are looking for a new team member to strengthen quantitative data analysis within the two projects, focused on consequential life cycle assessment (C-LCA) to estimate the avoided fossil emissions attributed to changes in wood uses and, more generally, climate change mitigation pathways in selected sectors.

Duties

Depending on the orientation and interests of the candidate, the duties may include:


	Contributing to building a system dynamics model for the textiles sector for examining the climate change mitigation potential of industry strategies and policy interventions.
	Modelling indirect market effects of chosen substitution cases, for example, with an open-source general equilibrium model (GTAP).
	Determining carbon parity periods for selected substitution cases, and comparisons to carbon budgets.
	Consequential LCA cases with an emphasis on market dynamics.


The duties may also include teaching and student supervision. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

Qualifications:


	PhD (for Postdoc) / MSc (for Doctoral researcher) in a relevant discipline (applied economics, engineering, sustainability science, industrial ecology, etc.)
	Strong background in one or more of the following: consequential LCA, simulation modelling (agent-based, system dynamics, or equilibrium modelling), programming (R or Python), econometrics and statistics
	Proficiency in spoken and written English (at least level C1)
	Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
	Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritise and organise her/his daily task, and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a research group


The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.
