The Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI) is a federal university established in 1913 and located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This reputable and prestigious university is one of the top 10 engineering schools in Brazil.
The institution has more than 100 years of experience and published research in the field of electrical engineering. UNIFEI is known in Latin America for its advanced research institutes in the field of power systems - specifically mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, automation and control engineering and computer engineering.
UNIFEI currently offers over 50 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses in both its campuses, located in Itajubá and Itabira. It also offers distance education, through its centres in five different cities. The university serves more than 7,000 undergraduate students and 1,000 postgraduate students.
Not only does the university operate its own radio station since 1961, but also houses a state-of-the-art library with over 200,000 books and advanced digital databases. UNIFEI boasts partnerships with several international universities in Europe, Canada and the USA including Washington State University, University of Windsor and TU Dresden to name a few.
Minas Gerais is a landlocked state in the west of Brazil. It is the second most populous and the fourth largest state in terms of its geographical area. Its capital city is Belo Horizonte, which is nestled in the centre of the state.
Minas Gerais has approximately 20 million inhabitants from very diverse backgrounds including Portugal, Africa, Germany and Lebanon. The city is well known for its mining activities in gold, topaz, diamonds and aquamarine. It is home to some of the longest rivers and highest mountains in the country. Your role The Center of Excellence in Peatlands, Climate Change and Ecological Restoration (PeatResC) is a newly funded, highly competitive Centre of Excellence starting in January 2026, bringing together Aalto University, University of Eastern Finland, Finnish Meteorological Institute and University of Helsinki. PeatResC addresses fundamental questions on ongoing changes in northern peatlands, focusing on climate-change impacts on biodiversity and climate feedbacks, as well as the effects of upcoming large-scale restoration efforts. The postdoctoral researcher will be based in the PeatResC research team led by Professor Miina Rautiainen at Aalto University and will work in close collaboration with partners across this internationally recognized consortium. The main research responsibilities include the development of novel methods and analysis of remote sensing data to monitor water table dynamics and biophysical properties of northern peatlands, from local to Holarctic scales. The position also involves participation in peatland field measurement campaigns, as well as teaching and student supervision at Aalto University. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to participate in extended field campaigns during the summer months, including travel for several weeks at a time and work in remote field conditions.
