Technical University of the North (Universidad Técnica del Norte) (UTN) was established in 1986 to meet regional demands for technical and professional education.
The university is located in Ibarra, a city in northern Ecuador and the capital of the Imbabura Province.
The university comprises five faculties and one graduate institute. The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences includes programmes in agribusiness, forestry, renewable energy, biotechnology, agroindustry and natural resources management. The Faculty of Administrative and Economic Sciences offers studies in business administration, accounting and auditing, economics, marketing, gastronomy, tourism and law. The Faculty of Applied Engineering Sciences provides degrees in telecommunications, software engineering, industrial engineering, mechatronics, textiles, electrical engineering and automotive engineering. The Faculty of Health Sciences includes medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and nutrition programmes. The Faculty of Education, Arts and Humanities covers subjects such as psychology, pedagogy, sports training, visual arts and communication.
UTN has contributed more than 2,000 research records in subject areas including agriculture, nutrition, biodiversity and environmental science.

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS) offers a wide range of undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes that integrate quantitative, computational and social science approaches. The appointee will play a key role in advancing the Faculty’s offerings in Computational Social Sciences (CSS), Master of Social Sciences in Social Data Analytics (MSDA) and Maser of Public Administration (MPA). The appointee will contribute to teaching and curriculum development across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervise graduate capstone projects, support programme operations (including admissions, recruitment, and digital promotion activities), advise students on their academic and professional development, and contribute to cross‑disciplinary collaborations within the Faculty and the University. Duties and Responsibilities The appointee will teach and coordinate the following courses (or their equivalents): Undergraduate (UG) Courses FOSS – Introduction to Computational Social Science SOCI – Programming for Social Scientists AILT – Digital Literacy Through a Social Sciences Lens Taught Postgraduate (TPg) Courses MSDA – Statistical Foundations MSDA – Causal Inference in the Social Sciences SOCI – Quantitative Research Methods Selection Criteria Applicants should possess a Master’s degree or above in Computational Social Science, Data Analytic Statistics, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy or a relevant social science discipline with strong quantitative focus. Priority will be given to those with: The ability to teach Machine Learning, Programming (Python-based), Natural language processing and Social Network Analysis courses on modern computational social science methods at the graduate level; A track record of completed projects working with computational models and large-scale social science data; Post-qualification working experience in relevant professional or academic settings; Interdisciplinary teaching and research; and Experience working with persons from diverse social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds is expected, alongside excellent communication skills in English. What We Offer A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. He/She will also serve as a key academic representative of the Hong Kong and China Marine Protection Alliances – cross-sector coalitions focused on marine conservation and sustainable use of marine resources at both local and national levels. Both initiatives are funded by the Swire Trust to coordinate and amplify marine protection efforts. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs Job Requirements A good degree with a major in Electronics Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications would be advantageous. Experience in following areas is highly desirable: Hands-on experience with both analogues and digital electronics Hands-on experience in developing, implementing applications, principles and programming in areas of embedded systems, IoT/IIoT, control systems, etc. Design of circuit schematics for layouts and development with both active and passive components, incl. knowledge of PCB routing, fabrication and prevalent IPC standards.
